When is the General Assembly in Session?
The General Assembly meets in accordance with rules set forth in both the North Carolina General Statutes and the State Constitution:

NC General Statute:
ยง 120-11.1. Time of meeting.
The regular session of the Senate and House of Representatives shall be held biennially beginning at 12:00 noon on the second Wednesday in January next after their election, and on thatday they shall meet solely to elect officers, adopt rules, and otherwise organize the session. When they adjourn that day, they stand adjourned until 12:00 noon on the third Wednesday after the second Monday in January next after their election.(1967, c. 1181; 1989 (Reg. Article 2 of the North Carolina Constitution:
Sec. 11. Sessions.


  1. Regular Sessions. The General Assembly shall meet in regular session in 1973 and every two yearsthereafter on the day prescribed by law. Neither house shall proceed upon public business unless a majority ofall of its members are actually present.

  2. Extra sessions on legislative call. The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House ofRepresentatives shall convene the General Assembly in extra session by their joint proclamation upon receipt by the President of the Senate of written requests therefor signed by three-fifths of all the members of theSenate and upon receipt by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of written requests therefor signed bythree-fifths of all the members of the House of Representatives.

*There is no statutory or constitutional requirement for when Session must end.
