H377 - 2026 Court Changes. (Ratified)

Overview: Section 29 of House Bill 377 would have added trial court administrators and judicial support staff to the definition of "court officer." This would have made Article 5A of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes (Endangering Executive, Legislative, Court, and Local Elected Officers) apply to these individuals. Article 5A provides for increased punishments for assaulting or threatening covered individuals.
House Bill 377 was ratified by the General Assembly on August 6, 2026, but was vetoed by the Governor on August 17th, 2026 and is not current law. If the General Assembly overrides the veto, House Bill 377 would become effective December 1, 2026, and apply to offenses committed on or after that date.
