Overview: Section 7.53 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) allows public school units in Wake County and Johnston County to receive a waiver of the computer science graduation requirement for students entering the ninth grade in the 2026-2027 school year by submitting a signed notification to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) stating that no computer science course fulfilling the computer science graduation requirement is available to students.
Public school units that receive a waiver for the 2026-2027 school year must submit a plan to DPI by January 1, 2027, specifying the approved computer science course that will be available to students to fulfill the graduation requirement beginning in the 2027-2028 school year.
This section became effective July 7, 2026.
