Overview: Section 8A.17 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) raises the amount of the forgivable loan for which a student enrolled in a medical school at an eligible institution of higher education would be eligible if the student intends to practice either primary care medicine or psychiatry in certain counties of the State. Eligible students would qualify for awards of forgivable loans in amounts up to $50,000 dollars per academic year with a total amount of up to $200,000 dollars per student.
This section became effective July 1, 2026, and applies beginning with forgivable loans awarded in the 2026-2027 academic year.
